The Colosseum was originally constructed
on the grounds on Nero's golden palace by emperor
Vespavian, and later completed by his son Titus in
AD 80. The Ludus Magnus was Rome's most famous
gladiatorial barracks and was linked to the Colosseum
by an underground tunnel. Long and bloody
games were held funded by the imperial coffers
to occupy the infamously rabbleous hordes of Rome,
the longest of which was reputed to have lasted 117
days during which around 9000 gladiators
are said to have come to a sticky end.
